If you have facial swelling, a serious injury to the face or mouth, or trouble breathing or swallowing, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. For orthodontic problems, call us at 516-674-4557.
Most Orthodontic Problems Can Wait
True orthodontic emergencies are rare. Most issues, like a loose bracket or a poking wire, can be handled comfortably at home until we can see you.
Either way, let us know about any problem so we can schedule a repair and keep your treatment on track.
Common Issues and What to Do
- Poking wire. Gently push the wire flat with the eraser end of a pencil, or cover it with orthodontic wax. If it still bothers you, call us.
- Loose bracket. If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax if it’s irritating. Call us to schedule a repair.
- Lost or broken aligner. Go back to your previous aligner, or move to your next one if we’ve told you to, and call us so we can order a replacement.
- Sore teeth. Some tenderness is normal after an adjustment or a new aligner. Over-the-counter pain relievers and soft foods help.
- Mouth sores. Rinse with warm salt water and use wax to cushion your brackets. Sores usually heal in a few days.
- Loose band or appliance. Save any pieces that come off and bring them to your appointment. Give us a call to let us know.
