If you have facial swelling, a serious injury to the face or mouth, or trouble breathing or swallowing, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. For orthodontic problems, call us at 516-674-4557.

Most Orthodontic Problems Can Wait

True orthodontic emergencies are rare. Most issues, like a loose bracket or a poking wire, can be handled comfortably at home until we can see you.

Either way, let us know about any problem so we can schedule a repair and keep your treatment on track.

Common Issues and What to Do

  1. Poking wire. Gently push the wire flat with the eraser end of a pencil, or cover it with orthodontic wax. If it still bothers you, call us.
  2. Loose bracket. If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax if it’s irritating. Call us to schedule a repair.
  3. Lost or broken aligner. Go back to your previous aligner, or move to your next one if we’ve told you to, and call us so we can order a replacement.
  4. Sore teeth. Some tenderness is normal after an adjustment or a new aligner. Over-the-counter pain relievers and soft foods help.
  5. Mouth sores. Rinse with warm salt water and use wax to cushion your brackets. Sores usually heal in a few days.
  6. Loose band or appliance. Save any pieces that come off and bring them to your appointment. Give us a call to let us know.
